The arrival of science and the scientific method in this field is something our community has been quite tentative about–actually, I’d go as far as to say ‘timid’, I really would–but we’ve isolated ourselves in a sort of virtual luddite colony, the 21st century’s social and productive equivalent of the leper colonies of yore, and the rest of the world looks upon us as soft, at best, and often as silly contrarians struggling, not to be relevant, but to even be noticed, and so we get into sinusy protracted discussions, doing our best to aproximate scholarly debate with what is really, underneath all the posturing and plumage, a grand penny-ante pissing match to see who can make the most outlandish claim while keeping a straight face. Nobody takes people like you and me seriously anymore, and I say it’s time to bring some hard science to the profession. Get Thomas Dolby on their asses and blind them with it. Who says diction, syntax, meaning, and narrative don’t lend themselves to the cold, hard rigor of biology and chemistry. Literature…communication…that IS biology, that IS chemistry, only way more complex, nuanced, and beautiful, and we need to catch up. I’ll come by tomorrow at lunchtime and we can start writing the grant together, brainstorm our strategy, what angle we want to take. I’ll bring sandwiches. Turkey okay?
