A Per Se A

Energy left for speech
diminished to its smallest metrical
unit.  Children, at one time, spoke
the alphabet "A per se A, B per se B"
until all was sorrowfully finished.
Now with everything
their mischief can scrape, they recite
"lmnop."
The children themselves
unsure of their boundaries,
unaware of spaces between
barbed slivers of meaning.
There is the blurring of firetrucks on ice,
the asking any stranger why the colors
of these surroundings and all their speedy
inhabitants change so often, maple leaves
boating to the ground.
I cup coin in my hand
when something solemn flutters
down from a treacherous height
to showcase the sum of our exchange.
These coins, these bits of bedrock,
are all we have left
to carry our trade.
